Setting Up an Encrypted Email Address in Leopard

I'm assuming you have already purchased or received a free email certificate from Thawte, Verisign or other reputable Certificate Authority. I'm also assuming you used Firefox to request the certificate. Using Safari is easier because the certificate is automatically added to your keychain and you can start using it immediately with Mail or Entourage. But unfortunately, most Certificate Authority site don't support Safari. These steps involve Firefox (Mozilla) because when Firefox is used, the certificated needs to be exported or actually backed up from Firefox and imported into your key chain.

Even though Firefox has an export option, it won't export the Private key with the email certificate. To do that you need to Backup the certificate.

Here's how to make a Certificate Backup in Firefox:

  1. Go to Preferences in Firefox

  2. Select the Advanced tab

  3. Select the Encryption sub tab

  4. Click on View Certificates

  5. This brings up the Certificate Manager

  6. Select Your Certificates tab

  7. Select the Thawte Freemail Member certificate, you may need to click on the triangle nex to Thawte Consulting (Pty) Ltd. to reveal it

  8. Click on the Backup... button

  9. Browse to your Desktop and save the backup file as EmailCert.p12

  10. Set a backup password

  11. Exit out of Firefox's Preferences

Now go to your Desktop in Finder and double click on the EmalCert.p12 file you just made.
The Add Certificates window will pop up and click OK to add it to your login key chain. Enter the password you set.

Now, almost done.

  1. The Keychain Access program is open after you imported the certificate, close it.

  2. Close Mail. And restart it.

  3. When you compose a new message from the certified email address, Mail will show the Encryption ( a lock) and Digital Signature (check) icons in the upper right corner of message area. You can send an encrypted email to a person AFTER you have received their Digital Signature in a previous email. So be sure to request it from the person. You can send your Digital Signature by enabling the Digital Signature check before you send an email.

OK, here's the instructions for Entourage 2004/2008

  1. Go to the Entourage Menu and select Accounts Settings...

  2. Double click on the Kerio account

  3. Select the Mail Security tab

  4. Under Digital Signing and Encryption, click on the Select button and select the certificate in the drop down list.

  5. Click OK to close the window.

Now after you create a new message, before you send it you can go to the Message menu and select Digitally Sign Message or Encrypt Message from the Security submenu.

Wow that was fun now wasn't it?
Let me know if there is something amiss here.
